Free movement of people allowed entire sectors of industry and service to import foreign labour at cheaper rates than locals. Look at the NHS - thousands of foreign nurses brought in who are now returning home, leaving an already strained service critically understaffed. Why wasn't the government promoting nurse training two decades ago to prevent this, or offer stipends, grants etc to get more locals into the healthcare system? Cos forrins are cheaper and the net tax yield is higher, and fuck the Britons, they can become social media managers or sutin.

Which is why it's incompatible with a vast pan-EU project that sets budgetary periods twice the duration of a standard government term. You just get prick governments spunking it all up the wall and wasting a generation's worth of effort.
